ICE Virtual Library provides access to the publications of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and includes fulltext articles in journals and proceedings; and summaries of books.
OCLC Databases now include -
Clase Periodica - Index of Latin American journals in the sciences and humanities. CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specialising in the social sciences and humanities. PERIODICA covers journals specializing in science and technology. Covers late 1970s to present.

PILOTS">PILOTS Database via CSA Illumina covers the period 1871-current and is updated monthly. This is bibliographic database, covering the Published International Literature On Traumatic Stress, aims to include citations to all literature on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events, without disciplinary, linguistic, or geographical limitations, and to offer both current and retrospective coverage.
IRWI: Information Research Watch International via CSA Illumina covers new, ongoing and completed research in information and library science and related fields from around the world since 1980.IRWI is compiled from records supplied by the researchers themselves and the database gives access to information about current research prior to its appearance in the published literature
The Music Index Online is a new database available from EbscoHost. This index covers over 800 music periodicals spanning the period 1975-present and also includes some backfile data from the period 1962-1975. Topics concerned with every aspect of the classical and popular world of music are categorized and organized according to the framework of an internal Subject List, which includes both Subject and Geographic headings. Covering all styles and genres of music, The Music Index Online cites book reviews, obituaries, news periodicals, and articles about music, musicians, and the music industry.

LexisNexis Academic is a new database available on the Howard College, Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses and superseded LexisNexis Professional. This resource provides current news, legal, financial, medical and biographical information from newspapers, government or private sources, market research, industry reports, SEC filings, Hoover's Company Reports, Disclosure Reports, international company and stock reports. Information is also available from case law, statutes and regulations; and secondary source materials such as legal news, law reviews and Shepard's Citations. This database includes Country Analysis which is a useful source for political, business and economic information on many industries in over 190 countries.
The Visual Dictionary Online has been added to the reference works on the e-books webpage. This is an all-in-one reference source which provides images, words and definitions. Words can be quickly located by searching themes and the meaning of words found by viewing the images they represent. This dictionary from Merriam-Webster helps you learn English in a visual and accessible way.

News item providing details of 2008 Library Orientation programmes at the libraries.
The New Encyclopedia of Africa is now available online from the e-books webpage. This reworking of the classic Encyclopedia of Africa South of the Sahara (1997) covers the entire African continent and expands both the geographical range (by treating North Africa) and the chronological coverage (by addressing the twenty-first century). Anthropology, geography, history and cultural studies combine in this reference work to present Africa in a new light. The print set in 5 vols will be housed in the Cecil Renaud Main Library, Pietermaritzburg.
The Aluka Digital Library has been added to the list of databases. This e-resource provides a wide variety of high-quality scholarly materials ranging from archival documents, periodicals, books, reports, manuscripts, and reference works, to three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories, plant specimens, photographs, and slides which provide information on Africa. The three main content areas covered are: African Plants; African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes; and Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa.

The Homepage has a new look, designed to improve visibility and navigation to useful information on the website. New options are now offered when searching for information:
Federated Searching across multiple databases. In addition to the alphabetical and subject lists of databases, library users can now opt for federated searching which allows simultaneous searching of up to 10 databases. Arrangement of resources on the federated search advanced screen is according to subject categories which helps to guide users in selecting appropriate databases. Personalisation features are to be introduced later which will allow users to save searches.
UKZN e-Journals Search more than 23 000 e-journals to which UKZN has access through direct subscriptions, subscriptions to databases and also titles freely available on the internet. The Article Search option makes it possible to search the titles of journal articles which appeared during the past 5 years. Easy access to the Tables of Contents of different journals and the personalised alerting service, allow users to implement their own customized current awareness strategy. The e-journal holdings of both Wits and UCT can also be searched, but access to full-text articles will depend on our own library subscriptions.
