The single storey facility houses library resources related to Education. The library collection has been substantially increased through the consolidation of education collections from the E G Malherbe Library on the Howard College Campus and also from the Main Library on the Westville Campus.

The book collection includes reference works, fiction and non-fiction, teaching packs, and a growing collection of electronic resources. In addition 13 600 books, and 137 abstracts were transferred from the Westville Campus Library. Books are arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

Books not available at Edgewood may be borrowed from other libraries within UKZN or the rest of South Africa if available. via the Inter-Library Loan office located at each campus library.

Bound journals are also arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Many journals are now available online via databases that the library subscribes to. In order to access the electronic resources from off campus, users must authenticate themselves with their staff/student lan login details.

Reference collection

The reference collection comprises general and subject-specific works, intended for consultation within the library. The collection includes subject-specific dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and handbooks, as well as English and other language dictionaries. These works are not available for loan.

The library acquires one bound print copy of every thesis as well as one copy on CD. The print copy is shelved in the thesis collection, and is not for loan. The electronic copy is uploaded onto ResearchSpace, UKZN’s digital repository. The digitisation of thesis is an ongoing project. Theses from the Faculties of Education from the ex-University of Natal and ex-University of Durban-Westville are housed in the theses collection.

Audiovisual material

A collection of audiovisual (AV) material in various formats (DVD, CD-ROM, video cassette, slide-tape programmes, slides, audio cassette) is available. Items can be loaned or may be viewed/listened to in the library. All AV material may be accessed using the OPAC. Where AV material accompanies a book, a note indicates this within the book, and the item is available at the issue desk.

Charts & Illustrations

A collection of charts and illustrations relevant to Education is housed in the display cabinets. These are available for loan for 14 days. These items may be accessed on the Library catalogue.

Centre for Education Policy Development (CEPD) collection

The collections of the Education Policy Unit (Natal) and the Centre for Education Policy Development (CEPD) were donated to the Library. This collection is made up of books, journal articles, legislation, parliamentary minutes and conference proceedings on all aspects of education and education policy issues.
