The Research Commons is a high level research environment intended for exclusive use by postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral level, as well as Researchers and Academic staff of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The aim is to create an environment conducive for research exchange and production.
The concept of the Research Commons is to develop specialized facilities, combine research and social space and increase library support for researchers across all campus libraries.
Experienced library staff members are on hand to assist with users’ information needs and to arrange consultations with subject specialists as needed. The Research Commons is entered via swipe card.

Welcome to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Campus, Research Commons web site. The Research Commons (RC) was launched with an aim of enhancing research output at South African Universities. This is part of the Research Libraries Consortium (RLC) project, supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and aims to develop specialized facilities and shared technologies to increase library support for researchers at each institution.

Edgewood Research Commons
ABOUT
Welcome to the UKZN library, Edgewood Campus, Research Commons web site. The Edgewood Research Commons is a dedicated space to support scholarship and research. It is available to post graduate students at Masters and Doctoral level as well as Academic researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The Research commons is situated in what was previously known as the Exhibition hall adjacent to the library, well away from the Libraries’ busy public areas. The space provides a peaceful environment where researchers can access extensive electronic resources, work on their research, relax in a comfortable lounge area, and collaborate with colleagues.
Facilities include workstations, high speed internet access, printer, copier, scanner, as well as a Lounge and seminar room

- To provide an environment conducive to research and knowledge production.

- To provide a collaborative environment for the production of scholarly exchange of information.

The Research Commons is intended to provide UKZN Academics, Researchers, PhD and Masters students with a dedicated space that is supportive of and conducive to producing quality research. It is a comfortable, secure and spacious venue which includes 20 computer stations running the most up-to-date supported applications software. Researchers will have access to:

- wireless connectivity
- areas for consultation and discussion with supervisors and peers
- printing, photocopying and scanning facilities
