How to join
- Undergraduate students are automatically registered as a member of the Library.
- Your student card is a multipurpose card which you can use to access the Libraries, take out books, and make photocopies or printouts.
- Your card is not transferable and you are responsible for materials issued on it.

- The card is not transferable and students are fully responsible for all library transactions in his/her name. This includes any penalties incurred for failure to return recalled books or to replace lost or damaged materials.

- Masters and PhD students submit a letter in advance (by December) from their Supervisors to grant them access to the library for 3 months.

Emeritus Professors
How to join
• Emeritus Professors will be registered as permanent staff once their letter of appointment has been received from Human Resources and the Library registration form has been completed.

Staff : Contract Staff
Appointments are automatically registered with the library in the same way as the permanent staff, except for a few categories of Appointment Types.
Staff : Contract Staff : 1 year or more
• Staff members appointed for 1 year or more.
• Should you not be automatically registered you will need to complete a registration form at the Circulation Desk of any Library.
• Please note that each user may only have one active library record. In other words, you may not use your staff and student record if you are studying. The record which gives you the least access will be barred, except for student assistants who must use their student card.

How to join

• Academic staff of institutions that are associated with UKZN but not paid by the University can register with the Library once the Library surety forms are completed by their Head of School.

Subscribers from other SA Higher Education Institutions
User Type
• Masters and Doctoral students, lecturers and researchers from other South African higher education institutions covered by the Committee of Higher Education Libraries of South Africa (CHELSA) agreement can register with the UKZN library.

Subscribers
- The library offers subscriber membership to members of the public (visitors), honorary subscribers, retired staff and alumni for an annual membership fee.
- The visitor membership is R1200.00 per year.
- Visitor card: R40.00
- The subscription covers the use of the UKZN Library and the print resources only.
- An Honorary Subscriber includes an Honorary staff member, affiliated to a particular Department in which he/she lectures; and Retired Staff.
Membership does not cover:
- Inter library loans
- Electronic Resources and Databases Access: (due to license agreements)
- Academic Reserves: (only restricted to registered students)
Retired Staff
How to join
• Retired staff members can join the Library on production of their retiree card (which reflects their pension number).

How to join
- Alumni of University of Durban Westville, University of Natal and University of KwaZulu-Natal pay half subscription on production of an Alumni Card. This card must be obtained through Alumni Affairs at Howard College Campus.
- Two identity photos will be required by the Alumni office.
