Nabisa Mbali joined the main library subject librarian unit on the Pietermaritzburg campus on February 1st . She will be responsible for the disciplines of Education, Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, Computer Science and Information Systems and Technology.
Nabisa completed her qualifications in librarianship at the University of the Western Cape in 1999 and worked in the library there for a short time before moving on to Helderberg College, a private higher education college in the Cape. During her nine years there she acquired a range of experience in subject librarian work in different disciplines as well as cataloguing and technical services and was recently the head of this library. Nabisa is a member of the national library association, LIASA and ASDAL: Association for Seventh-day Adventist Librarians.

We have said goodbye to Ms Catherine Dubbeld, who retired at the end of December and welcomed Ms Joyce Myeza, the new Howard College Campus Librarian, on 4th January 2010. Joyce has 13 years’ experience in libraries, gained at the Tembaletu Community Centre, Umgeni Water and the Durban University of Technology. She has recently returned from a two-year stint as a Fulbright scholar at Simmons College, Boston, USA, where she completed her Master of Science in LIS.
As an energetic member of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), she served terms as Membership Secretary and Public Relations Officer. Joyce is particularly interested in digitisation and the use of information and communications technology in libraries and was instrumental in creating the electronic library at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Center while completing her studies in the USA

Two new appointments made at the Medical Library

Thiru Munsamy – Head of Circulation
Buhle joined the Medical Library team on 1 April 2009. She has been working at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital for the past three years. She is familiar with the users of the Medical Library as both these libraries have similar users. She has settled well in her new job.
Thiru Munsamy hails from Westville Main Library from the Academic Reserves section. He joined the Medical Library team on 1 July 2009. He started working at the Westville Main Library in 1995 and he moved to the Academic Reserves section in 2000. He started off as a baggage attendant and gradually worked his way up the library ladder to the position of Senior Library Assistant, a position he occupied until his new appointment at the Medical Library. He has also settled well in his new job.
We wish the new appointees well in their new roles.
Appointment of electronic resources librarian
The UKZN libraries has appointed Mr. Suren Moodley to the post of electronic resources librarian. Prior to this appointment Mr.Moodley was employed at the Pietermaritzburg Campus library.
|His duties include managing access to library electronic journals, databases and e-book subscriptions and the promotion and publicising of these electronic resources using the library website and the university notice system. He is also available to deal with queries regarding these subscriptions from staff and students of the University. He is based at the E.G. Malherbe library.|

Introductory training in finding and accessing electronic journals
The Pietermaritzburg campus subject librarians offered introductory training in finding and accessing electronic journals during the week of 17 August. Two sessions were offered daily. Two approaches to finding and accessing electronic journals were covered. These were: via Google Scholar which provides links to UKZN subscription databases, and via individual databases from the Library’s website, when the name of the database is known.
The sessions were held in the multimedia classroom at the Cecil Renaud main library.Although the sessions were aimed at newcomers to electronic journal searching, many of the 60 attendees were post-graduate students both local and international, as well as some staff members wanting a refresher course.
The book suppliers Adams donated a selection of current fiction, allowing a lucky draw to take place and 10 attendees each received a book. Several of the prize winners were able to come together on Thursday 27 August in the Library to receive their prizes. Sabinet provided notepads and pens and Van Schaik pens, which were given to each attendee at the training sessions.

The Journal Citation Reports for 2008
For first time users: JCR ”provides easy access to data that helps you evaluate and compare scholarly journals. It is an essential, comprehensive, and unique resource tool for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from over 7,500 journals from over 3,300 publishers in over 60 nations.” (JCR site).
JCR is accessible from the Library’s website. From the option Electronic resources, choose Databases A-Z and click on Journal Citation Reports or Web of Knowledge (JCR listed under ‘Select a database’). There is a tutorial under the ‘Information for new users’ option. The Journal Citation Reports for 2008 are also available at the Web of Knowledge Gateway. (off campus access). UKZN Libraries subscribe to both the Science and the Social Sciences editions.
JCR is the only source of citation data on journals. It includes virtually all specialties in the areas of science, technology, and the social sciences. Moreover, it shows the relationship between citing and cited journals in a clear, easy-to-use framework.

Researchers are able to evaluate and compare journals using the citation data provided in the Journal Citation Reports. Data covers more than 8 000 scholarly and technical journals, including some 400 new titles. The 2008 release has seen an improvement in the functionality and metrics offered. These are described by the JCR Website as:
Five-Year Impact Factor – Gives a broader range of citation activity for a more informative snapshot over time. For journals in subjects where citation activity continues to rise through several years, this allows more of their total citation activity to be included in a critical performance metric.
Eigenfactor Metrics, comprised of the Eigenfactor Score and Article Influence Score, are designed to reflect the prestige and citation influence of journals by considering scholarly literature as a network of journal-to-journal relationships.

|The TD-Net suite of meta-searching and linking software was implemented at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in August 2007.|
It enhanced our existing services by providing integrated access to electronic content in the form of journal articles, books and other kinds of library resources. This software provided an entirely new service to UKZN library users as no services of this kind had previously been established
However, it is now time to move on. UKZN Libraries, along with Wits and UCT, our partners in the Carnegie-funded Research Libraries Consortium, will shortly be implementing new software that will overlay the current functionalities.
Drawing on Web 2.0 paradigms and the latest search technologies, this new software, Primo, marketed by Ex Libris, will add enhanced discovery tools and enable personalization and customization for advanced, sophisticated users. Read more about Primo at:

On the 12 to 14 May, Margaret Bass, Anita Kromberg and Omesh Jagarnath attended the African Digital Scholarship and Curation Conference in Pretoria.
Opportunities, strategies and practical examples for new forms of research and scholarship were identified and the management of the digital content of these activities was discussed by academics, researchers, scientists, information professionals and IT experts.
Presentations ranged from local case studies on digital data management , curation and preservation to the sophisticated work being done by European experts in making digital data even more useful to research communities. An example of this was a presentation by Maarten Hoogerwerf from the Data Archiving & Networked Services (DANS) in the Netherlands. He discussed their ‘durable enhanced publication’ initiative which provides the researcher not only with a publication, but includes all research data and discussion by other academics on the topic.
Of particular interest was the information on institutional repositories. Broadly defined, institutional repositories refer to the storing and making available of the digital intellectual work created by an institution and its community – that is; a digital collection of its research output.
South African universities who have established institutional repositories (for example, the University of Pretoria), were able to share expertise and challenges and provide the necessary tools for others to begin the process of establishing their own repositories. It was illuminating to learn of the many advantages institutional repositories bring to their institutions, including the increased exposure researchers are enjoying using these open access routes.

Simultaneously CABI has developed a Swine flu ‘dashboard’ that brings together up-to-the-minute information on the virus (http://www.netvibes.com/cabialerts).The ‘dashboard’ includes resources from CABI and critical advice from key health organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Eight members of the UKZN library staff graduated in the recent graduation ceremonies with degrees from across the qualifications spectrum. At the top end of the spectrum Nora Buchanan, Director of Library Services and subject librarian Rosemary Kuhn, were awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Department of Information Studies.

Rose is the first practicing librarian on the Pietermaritzburg campus to be awarded a DPhil in more than 45 years.
Nora’s thesis explored the history of the libraries of the University Natal from 1910 – 2003.
Rose’s thesis dealt with legal information literacy: Designing and assessing the feasibility of an active learning approach to the teaching of legal research.
At Masters level, Nonhlanhla Ngcobo, campus librarian at the Medical School library and Rani Moodley, also from the Medical library were awarded degrees in Information Studies and Education respectively.
Nonhlanhla’s thesis considered the effect the introduction of a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum has had on medical libraries in South Africa and, on a similar theme, Rani investigated how the role of health science librarians has changed with the introduction of the PBL curriculum.
Rebecca Msomi from EG Malherbe library and Sagren Naidoo from Westville library were both awarded Honours degrees in Library and Information Science.

New Chair of the KwaZulu-Natal IGBIS Branch.
Ashika Ramlakhan recently took over from Susheila Naidoo as the chair of the KwaZulu-Natal IGBIS Branch. She catalogues at UKZN (Westville campus). Ashsika graduated in 1989 at the then University of Durban-Westville with a B.Bibl degree and completed her honours with the then University of Natal (PMB). Ashika also has a post -graduate diploma in Tourism and has been working in various sections in the library since 1989.
Her main focus for this year will be to accomplish the training programmes that were scheduled for last year but did not happen, viz.,Cataloguing (basic or intermediate), Working on OCLC and NACO training.
The IGBIS Committee wished Ashika all success in her new role! And from the IGBIS KwaZulu-Natal Branch report of February 2009 we can see that things are planned for KwaZulu-Natal IGBIS members:

Electronic textbooks freely available from Global Text Project
The Global Text Project http://globaltext.org
, is an initiative of the University of Georgia and the University of Denver, it provides frees electronic textbooks to university students in developing economies.
The goal is to create a library of 1,000 electronic books covering a range of subjects typically taught at the undergraduate level in a comprehensive university. All books are released under a Creative Commons License and can be downloaded for free. For a list of currently available books and those in production, see http://globaltext.org/books.
All books are written, edited, and managed by professors and students from around the world, therefore books will be maintained for currency and relevancy across the globe.
The latest release is Comparative Educational Psychology by Kelvin Seifert and Rosemary Sutton. This book lays the foundation for prospective teachers to learn about various teaching methodologies and covers material typically found in many teacher training programs.

Appointment of subject librarian at Edgewood library
Mr William Dansoh has joined the Edgewood Library as Subject Librarian
with effect from 1 February 2009. William has been working as a subject librarian at the Life Sciences Library in Pietermaritzburg since 2006.Apart from being a librarian, he is also an educator. He taught for several years at high school level before getting into librarianship in 1992.
He has also taught part-time in the Department of Information Studies in Pietermaritzburg and is currently teaching the ACE (Advanced Certificate in Education) – School library development programme.He is passionate about equipping undergraduates with information literacy skills needed at tertiary level and providing research support to researchers.
His research interests are the impact of school libraries on academic achievement at school level and how to equip undergraduates with appropriate skills to access and optimally use information resources to meet educational goals. William is also one of the UKZN librarians who will be embarking on a two month internship in the US.

This is Phase two of the Carnegie Corporation sponsored Research Libraries Consortium project which sees more subject librarians visiting the United States between 20 February and 3 May 2009. A total of nine librarians from the universities of the Witwatesrand, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal will be participating.
The purpose of the visit is to obtain insights into research libraries within the United States. The visit will begin with a two week stay at the Mortensen Centre at the University of Illinois library for all nine librarians. This will be followed by attendance at the annual conference of the American Association of College and Research Libraries which is being hosted by the city of Seattle this year.
After that the nine will part company and each will spend six weeks at a research library. William will be hosted by Arizona State University, Sara by the University of Washington library in Seattle and Avenal by Purdue University library

institutions – UKZN, Wits and UCT – participating in a joint project supported by
the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Carnegie project aims to develop
specialized facilities, shared technologies, and highly-trained professional

The Research Commons is open to postgraduate researchers who would like to

On the 1st October Prof. Johan Jacobs (Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Knowledge Production and Partnerships) opened UKZN’s first Research Commons at the EG Malherbe Library on Durban’s Howard College Campus
The Research Commons is part of the Research Libraries Consortium (RLC) project which is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The RLC aims to enhance research output at South African universities by offering ongoing support to Masters and PhD researchers. The Research Commons is a comfortable and spacious Wi-Fi facility with 18 personal computers which will provide access to the forthcoming online Research Portal. The portal will contain a wide range of electronic information resources, as well as research management, writing and collaboration tools. Researchers will be assisted in the Research Commons by skilled research librarians who will provide training, support and encouragement all the way to graduation.
This new facility, situated on the Ground Floor, EGM Library, aims to provide quality services, expert help and seamless access to a range of research information. The target is Masters & PhD students and academic staff and researchers. These individuals will be able to pursue the entire research process in a supportive environment.

Use of documents is restricted in only a few instances, at the donor’s request. School groups need to make a booking. The establishment of the Joe Ryan Oral & Dental Library was a joint initiative by the late doctor Joe Ryan, who donated a substantial amount of money to this development, the South African Dental Association (SADA) and the former University of Durban-Westville. The Joe Ryan Oral & Dental Library is a branch library of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville Campus Library and is located at the King George V Hospital. It is the only Oral and Dental Library in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
It caters for the information needs of the Oral and Dental staff, students and private practitioners. It has an excellent collection of books, journals, electronic resources and reference works specializing in dental literature.
The library is open from 08h00 to 16h30 from Monday to Friday excluding public holidays and university holidays. It is staffed by a Librarian and two student assistants. The collection can be accessed through the online catalogue at http://libprod.ukzn.ac.za/

We would like to encourage academic staff to arrange for their students to attend a session. UKZN library has a wonderful selection of online resources which the students don’t always find on their own. As students are working on assignments at the moment this would be an ideal time for them to learn how to use these resources.
There are scheduled sessions at 10.30 or 14.10 daily, from the 3-12th September. These are 45 minute sessions which are geared for undergraduate students and which will allow time for practical hands-on searching. Sessions can also be arranged at other times – please contact your subject librarian to make a booking.
Book Exhibition Edgewood Campus library
|As part of the annual drive to upgrade the collection, the Edgewood Campus Library is holding its annual Book Exhibition.|
From the Monday, 8th until Wednesday, 10th of September staff and students will be able to visit the exhibition and place orders for the Library.
Several book suppliers,and publishers and many more, have been invited to exhibit their latest publications in the fields of Education, Research and the Social Sciences.
The library invites all academic staff and interested students to attend the exhibition and use the opportunity to select titles for their respective disciplines, thereby enhancing the library collection. The exhibition is also open to research and administrative staff
There will be library staff available, and your orders can be placed electronically …. no more filling out of cards. We shall have computers available for staff to place their orders.
Training on the new iLink system will also be available for staff.

Carnegie portrait presented to UKZN Library for the Research commons
|One aspect of the Research Libraries Consortium project in which the UKZN library is involved, is the development of a post-graduate research commons. This research commons is envisaged as a physical space with computer and other facilities, staffed by subject librarians, to assist post-graduate students and researchers with research support. Carnegie Corporation of New York has funded such a research commons in each of the libraries at the Universities of Witwatersrand, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal. The UKZN library research commons will be located on the ground floor of the EG Malherbe library at the Howard College campus.|
The UKZN research commons will be officially opened in September. The research commons at Wits and Cape Town were officially opened by representatives of Carnegie Corporation during the last week of July. UKZN library director Nora Buchanan and subject librarian Rosemary Kuhn attended the opening at Wits at the request of Carnegie. During the proceedings Nora briefly outlined the progress of the UKZN library research commons and Rose provided overall impressions of her internship in the United States earlier this year as part of this project.

Information Studies Programme Seminar Invitation
The Information Studies Programme runs a regular seminar series called ”Info Matters”. The purpose of these seminars is to share knowledge and information and to stimulate discussion on key academic and development issues in an informal setting.
This is an invitation to a seminar which will take place on Thursday – 21st August 2008 from 10.30am until 11.30am at room 114 (New Arts Building).
The topic of the seminar will be: Teaching legal research skills within an information literacy paradigm and from an active learning approach.
Presented by Rose Kuhn – Subject librarian (Law) UKZN – PMB campus
Rose has been a subject librarian in the UKZN PMB campus library for 25 years. She is responsible for the Law Library on the PMB campus, as well as other disciplines and she has great interest in ‘library instruction’.
The presentation is based on her PhD research which is about a new approach to teaching legal research to 2nd year Law students. Legal Research Writing and Reasoning is a 2nd year course within the LLB curriculum. The course is compulsory for all 2nd year students. Rose has been involved in this programme for about 5 years. She has developed the programme from an information literacy paradigm, taking cognisance of teaching and learning theory.
Refreshments will be served at the end of the seminar.

Library staff in other spaces
|Shadia Alli, library administrative officer at the Pietermaritzburg campus law library since 2003, has recently been admitted as an advocate of the High Court.|
Shadia, a Pietermaritzburg girl, matriculated in 1986, and worked for a short period with CNA, before taking a job at the then Natal Society Library. She worked there for 16 years before joining this university’s library as a library assistant in the main library. She registered with the University’s Open Learning programme for a degree in Community and Development. After the untimely death of law library assistant Irwin Poonsamy in 2003, Shadia agreed to move across to the law library and was soon appointed to the senior position there. Shadia changed direction in terms of study and registered for the part time LLB degree which she completed in 2007, inclusive of two Deans’s commendations. Shadia graduated in April of this year with her law degree.
Shadia is currently registered for a Masters degree in Law and has assisted with the teaching of the Legal Research Writing and Reasoning module, compulsory for all second year LLB and Legal Studies students. In July she was appointed as an advocate. Shadia’s future plans at this stage are uncertain as she enjoys the academic and law library environment and is interested in teaching. Shadia is married with two daughters.

DITCHE (Developing Information Technology Capacity in Higher Education)
|The DITCHE programme run by the Tertiary Education Network (TENET) hosts an annual event for those with IT responsibilities working in academic libraries in the higher education sector in South Africa. The purpose of this National Library IT Event is to deepen and strengthen the bonds that exist within this community by bringing people together once a year to talk, listen, share ideas, discuss experiences, plan collaborations, and to learn from one another. UKZN library representatives were Roshini Pather and Sagren Moodley.|
The event is participant driven and can take the form of formal presentations, discussions and/or breakaway workshops. This year’s event was held at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University conference centre from the 20-22 May 2008. Roshini Pather and Sagren Moodley attended the event. Sagren Moodley reported on the progress of the Research Libraries’ Consortium activities at UKZN. This included a brief report on the six-week internship (development programme) in the USA that Omesh Jagarnath and Rosemary Kuhn participated in.
|This year’s event covered a number of issues that are affecting libraries in SA, namely institutional repositories, digitization projects, the changing role of librarians and technology hints and tips.|
A key issue academic libraries are grappling with is that of Institutional Repositories (IR). An open discussion was held on Institutional repositories and some issues discussed were:
- IR content: what should an IR include – is it just the research output of the institution, what about research that is externally funded?
- Copyright: who takes responsibility for it – the end-user, i.e. the author, or the administrator, such as the Library or university? Currently there is no copyright law on digital documents.
- Policy issues were discussed at length and these require careful consideration as these affect the success or failure of a repository
- IR document format: textual and multimedia
- Lack of ”buy in” from academics and their concerns
- The roles and responsibilities of those involved in setting up an IR
- Marketing an IR to the university community and library staff
- The use of open source software versus licensed software. A number of projects were discussed that had used Greenstone Digital Library software, D-Space and ContentDM
Digitization and library collections:
A number of library collections engaged in digitization projects were reported on. Gwenda Thomas and Jeanne Berger from Rhodes University provided input on the challenges and issues they are facing, with reference to the digitization of the International Library of African Music collection.
Changing role of librarians:
Geoff Hoy from TENET led a stimulating discussion on the ”librarian as an intellectual” which got us librarians really thinking ”out of the box” in terms of our supporting researchers and users in different ways. With such a vast array of information at one’s fingertips librarians need to engage more fully at an intellectual and conceptual level in terms of matching users with needed information.
- An interesting in-service training programme for librarians is taking place at Rhodes University Library using the open source software Moodle. This programme provides in-service training, at different levels, for their library staff over a six month period. The programme includes an evaluation. Rhodes library had identified a need for succession planning due to attrition, retirements, and resignations and the Moodle based progamme reflects at attempt to upskill library staff and keep staff abreast of developments in the library and information world. This programme was developed and offered to all staff who were qualified, studying towards a library qualification or staff members who were qualified but not in professional positions.
Hennie Rautenbach from Sabinet presented a report titled ”Peregrinations in the web 2.0 and library 2.0 environments”. Top global companies have poured billions into technology developments to enhance their products and capture markets and libraries need to do the same. Libraries need to take on board technologies that are an integral part of users’ lives in order to provide service, meet users where they are at and prevent the re-inventing of the wheel.
Duncan Greaves provided us with a ”librarian toolbox” for troubleshooting basic network access problems. He also presented a simplified view of computer networking.
Overall the workshop afforded us an opportunity, not only to network with colleagues who are working with similar projects, but to keep us abreast with current ICT trends in the LIS community.

New subject librarians at Pietermaritzburg and Howard College campus libraries
|Noni Makhathini has joined the Pietermaritzburg subject librarian unit with effect from 1 June 2008. A Durbanite, Noni undertook her tertiary studies at the universities of Zululand and Natal completing her library diploma in 1994. She has worked for the eThekwini municipal library, an AIDS project in Amanzimtoti and recently the Law Society library in Pietermaritzburg.|
Noni will be based in the Cecil Renaud main library and will be responsible for the subjects: Computer Science, Education, Information systems and technology, Mathematics and Statistics and actuarial science.
The library welcomes Noni on board and wishes her well in her new post.

|Sagren Moodley has joined the Howard College subject librarian unit with effect from 1 June 2008. Sagren has been based in the Medical School library until this appointment. He has worked at UKZN (and the former UN) for the past 16 years and has progressed steadily through the ranks to his current position. A move in 1998 from the EG Malherbe Library to the Medical Library as IT/E-resources librarian set the ball rolling in terms of his studies and professional activities.|
He is currently pursuing his Masters in Information Studies through UKZN. Sagren hopes to utilize his IT knowledge in developing new and innovative programmes for Information Services. He will be responsible for part of the Engineering portfolio. Sagren is involved in the development of off campus access to library resources, the Library’s webpage and a range of e-resource activities. Research Library Consortium News – Learning Librarians
The library in collaboration with the Carnegie Research Library Consortium is continuing with its project to train and upskill its librarians to better support the research process.
The library aims to provide better services, facilities and materials to its user communities and to begin the process of providing this, focus groups of academic participants were recently held in Pietermaritzburg and Durban to canvas opinion. These groups were guided by Arnold Hirshon, (the United States consultant to the Carnegie Project). Input from these groups will help to educate the library staff on user needs.
In addition, Librarians attended intensive workshops on statistics, research techniques and survey construction. These tools will also aid Librarians to solicit opinion and thus be better informed of user needs.
Part of the Research Library Consortium Project is planning a new Library Portal specifically designed with the researcher in mind. Librarians have had initial discussions this past week (with input from relevant experts) on what will be required on this website and urge anyone with ideas to contact their Subject Librarian.
|Nthabiseng Mosala-Bryant, the Head of Library Information Systems who was based at the Pietermaritzburg campus library, has left the University library service with effect from 30 May 2008. Nthabiseng, who hails from Mount Frere,Eastern Cape joined the Pietermaritzburg campus library on 1 November 2000 as a subject librarian in the Cecil Renaud library.|
From August 2007 until her resignation she headed the Library Information Systems section which is responsible for the library computer system administration. Nthabiseng’s new job involves setting up a governmental library from scratch. We wish her well in her challenging new venture and thank her for her contribution to the library. Nthabiseng will be missed by all as a colleague and friend.

|Mr Ronnie Appalsamy, from the Acquisitions Dept, has taken early retirement after 38 years of service in various departments at the EGM Library.|
In his retirement Mr Appalsamy will be engaged in business ventures which include a restaurant and clothing store.
|The Cataloguing Department of EGM bids farewell to Mr Jeff Nyoka who entered the service as a Library Assistant in 2002.|
He leaves us to focus on his studies toward his MBA and concentrate on a business venture.

who has replaced Mr Ronnie Appalsamy.
Brenda joined the University in 1976. For the last 20 years she has served at the Medical Library before her move.

Some reflections on research libraries in the United States – Rose Kuhn

Having spent time in two research libraries, the University of Illinois library and Washington University of St Louis, the first impression is of ‘so much more’ of everything in terms of resources and funding and one has a sense that with money all things are possible! Founded in 1867, the University of Illinois hosts one of the largest public university libraries in the United States with a library staff of over 500 (excluding a student assistant cohort of 500); an annual library budget of $32 billion and holdings of some 24 million items
The library system follows a decentralised model thus maintains nearly 40 separate discipline based and branch libraries. Thus there is considerable duplication of resources and services but also very specialized collections. The University is large enough to support a separate undergraduate library, having a student enrolment of 42 000. Some libraries are merely a room whilst others are huge stand alone buildings. Professional librarians may seek tenure and become faculty and many librarians are appointed as subject specialists based on their discipline based qualifications.

Washington University at St Louis (WashU) is an example of a private research university with a student cohort of approximately 12 000. The library has a staff of 175 and comprises a main and 12 branch libraries thus also reflecting the decentralized model. The annual library budget is approximately $3.2 billion. Private universities are funded almost exclusively via endowments and grants although public universities such as Illinois experience dwindling state support such that this forms one quarter of total funding. Thus grant writing is a major activity within universities including the libraries and personnel are employed exclusively to perform this function.
Private university libraries do not employ professional staff on a tenure basis and some subject librarians are also employed for their subject specialization. In WashU the reference librarian function is somewhat distinct from that of the subject librarian although there is overlap.
Most of these research libraries face similar challenges which are no different to those facing South African academic librarians. Technological innovations and the move to the digital environment has and is creating new forms of scholarly communication with concomitant challenges around copyright, open access, institutional repositories and migration to electronic formats. There are vast opportunities for digitization and application of Web 2.0 in the library environment. At WashU the library is using software called LibraryThing to enhance catalogue functionality by adding book cover pictures and links to reviews, giving the catalogue an ”Amazon” type look.

In terms of the move to a digital environment, libraries are looking to reinvent themselves as regards services, redefine service in the digital age, as well as support to faculty and researchers in particular, and new ways to communicate with users. For example, the chemistry library at WashU niversity has this year developed a page on Facebook to reach undergraduates. Needless to say, bandwidth is not a problem at these institutions!. User education remains an ongoing area of development.

Library Week Competition winners
Library Week was celebrated at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine’s Medical Library from the 17- 22 March 2008.
Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
This year’s theme was “From local to global @ your library”.
To highlight South African Library Week, the Library held various events during the course of the week.
Library amnesty for fines was the most popular.
Exciting displays were also put up at the library and a competition was held with exciting prizes up for grabs.

South African Library Week 17-22 March 2008
Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.
The theme for library week this year is “From local to global @ your library”
The theme has been inspired by the story of Neal Petersen, the South African yachtsman who was the first black man to sail solo around the world, who says that he would not be where he is today without libraries. Growing up as a young boy on the Cape Flats, he discovered sailing and the art of navigation through books in his local public library and from there truly went from local to global.
The eighth clause of the Freedom Charter says “The doors of learning and culture shall be opened” and continues “All the cultural treasures of ‘mankind’ shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands”.
Libraries are also about reading and encouraging a culture of reading, enabling users to explore the world and to broaden their horizons.Users can go from local to global @ their library through books, journals, the internet and other electronic and digital media.
In celebration of South African Library Week all UKZN Libraries are running a Library Amnesty on fines
for the period 17th March – 20th March 2008.
All current overdue items that are returned during this week will have their fines waived.
This does not include Inter Library Loan Books or Academic Reserves.

The new term at Cecil Renaud (Main) Library, Pietermaritzburg
Orientation Week saw numerous groups of new first year students being welcomed to the
Library by subject librarians, and provided with an orientation to the library by Orientation
Week mentors. Since then, twice daily at 10.30 and 2.10, training in the use of the iLink
on-line catalogue is being offered in the multimedia classroom. Several displays are mounted
in the foyer to highlight aspects of the information environment.
| ||The main display reflects the role played by the Library in the information environment: the people, physical resources and electronic resources via the Library’s website which provide access to a world of information beyond the library walls.|
The display includes a ‘who’s who’ in the library; a range of information sources: books: fiction and non-fiction, journals, newspapers, DVD’s and pamphlets about databases. The fiction stand has proved particularly popular with users.

Many subject specific groups have attended sessions in the use of a range of
information resources, in particular, database.
Off to the USA
Omesh Jagarnath from the EG Malherbe library and Rose Kuhn from the Pietermaritzburg campus library will be visiting the USA for seven weeks from mid March until early May as part of the Research Libraries Consortium project.
The development programme begins with two weeks at the Mortenson Centre for International Library Programmes at the University of Illinois, Urbana, and is ‘intended to expand their knowledge and understanding of information and research support as it is practiced in research libraries in the United States’. They will be joined by five colleagues from Wits and UCT.
Omesh then moves on to work at the library of the University of Texas at Austin for a month whilst Rose will be hosted by Washington University at St Louis, Missouri. The trip also includes a visit to San Francisco and finishes with attendance at the ”Living the future” conference in Arizona. These biannual conferences focus on aspects of library collaboration, organizational change, building learning environments and new developments in library and information technologies and practices.
New head of subject librarian unit
Lindiwe Soyizwapi has been appointed as Head of the Pietermaritzburg Main Library subject librarian unit with effect from 1 March 2008. Lindiwe joined the unit in 1991 and has worked in both the Main and Life sciences libraries. She worked at Umgeni Water library for four and a half years in the late 1990’s before returning to UKZN in 2001.

UKZN Library Orientation Programmes
Library orientation mainly for first year students is taking place. Walk-in sessions are offered daily between 09:00 – 12:30 and 14:00 – 16:00, in the Library. Their purpose is to:
Introduce students to the various Campus libraries and using the OPAC( the Online Public Access Catalogue) and the Library webpage to find different information resources.
Introduce the classification system of all library material.
Understand the services available and discover electronic resources.
This includes a tour of the library.
All students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the library system.

Library Orientation is offered to first year and new students at the Howard College Campus.
At the EG Malherbe Library, library services and facilities are introduced to students by means of a video. This is followed by small group tours of the library which are conducted by student mentors. Orientation sessions are scheduled as follows:
Engineering students: 31 January 2008 at 14:00 in S1 lecture theatre (Shepstone Building).
Humanities, Development and Social Sciences students: 1 February 2008 at 12:00 at SU (Students’ Union).

Library Orientation, which gave an overview of the Medical Library layout, borrowing privileges and the rules and regulations of the UKZN Libraries and what the Library offers, took place on the 25 January 2008. This was done as a PowerPoint Presentation for one hour to approximately 200 1st year students.
The Information Literacy sessions will take place over 2 days when smaller groups of thirty students are shown how to access the UKZN Libraries webpage and a demo of iLink OPAC to find relevant books / journals in the library. Keywords from one of the cases or problems in their Orientation Guide are used to explore iLink OPAC which indicates whether the Medical Library or any of the UKZN Libraries has material on the topic.

1st year library orientation takes place on Tuesday 5 February 2008. Students are taken on a tour of the Main Library (Cecil Renaud) to show them the facilities and resources by the student mentors.
From the 1st day of term all students are encouraged to book a slot to learn how to use the library catalogue and other resources. For subject specific library orientation please contact the relevant subject librarian.

Orientation and User Education Programmes

Library orientation for first entry students is taking place from the 11 – 25 February.
Three sessions are offered daily between 09:00 – 9:40; 11:00 – 11:40 and 14:00 – 14:40 on level 9 Seminar Rooms in the Library.
Their purpose is to:
- Welcome new students, and explain library membership
- Introduce students to the various Campus libraries and using the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue – iLink); and the Library webpage to find various information resources
- Explain how the Library collections are arranged
- Introduce the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)
- Inform users of the library services available
- Introduce users to electronic resources

Newly appointed Howard College Campus Librarian
Ms Catherine Dubbeld has been appointed Campus Librarian for the Howard College Libraries.
Catherine assumed her new role on the 01 November 2007,
after spending a number of years heading up the Information Services Division at the EG Malherbe Library.
Catherine’s career in libraries spans over 38 years. She began her career at the Durban Municipal Library in 1972 and then joined the University of Natal Libraries as a part time catologuer in 1975. Seven years later she was appointed as the Science/ Engineering branch librarian. In 1988, she was promoted to Chief Subject Librarian and then headed the Information Services Division at EG Malherbe Library from 1999.
Catherine is a strong advocate of the library profession and she is an active member of LIASA where she has held office since 2004. She is currently the second provincial representative for the KZN branch of LIASA.
”Ensuring that the Howard College Libraries are appropiately staffed and resourced to support the University’s teaching, learning and research in the 21st century” is what Catherine hopes to achieve.

Opening of the Ronald Louw Research Commons 11th October 2007
The merging of the staff and student population of the Law Faculties from the previous University of Durban-Westville and University of Natal at Howard College placed considerable strain on the already stretched library, study and research facilities in the G.M.J. Sweeney Law Library. This strain was exacerbated by the fact that the Library is a critical component in student through-put and the publications output of staff and students. This minimal resource had to be redistributed to a wider academic community and student population although the same essential service still had to be rendered. The Law Library had to accelerate re-engineering to ensure the redistribution of limited resources to a much wider user community.
This motivated the Library and Computer Committee in the Faculty under Mr Adrian Bellengère, along with Dr Reggie Raju, the head Law Librarian, and the Deputy Dean in Howard College, Professor John Mubangizi, to put together a proposal for the extension of the IT based research facilities in the Library. The University was persuaded as to the necessity for this extension and provided the much needed finance.
Given the international trend towards providing more computer workstations in libraries to keep pace with the changing role of libraries and after considering similar research centers in libraries in the Universities of Sydney, New South Wales and Western Australia, the Library decided to significantly reduce the space used for shelving and has redistributed the vacant area to create a new research commons. The research commons will afford researchers the opportunity to engage in research in an environment with a distinct ambiance using the latest equipment to access ever increasing subscriptions to electronic material. The current design makes the Law Library the first in UKZN to create a state-of-the-art research commons.
The late Professor Ronald Louw was the Head of the Law School from 2002-2004. He was seriously committed to the development of research in the Faculty and to the appropriate use of technology. It was under his leadership that the first extensions to the library were realised. The Faculty, on behalf of the Library, has made representation for extension to the library to be named after him: THE RONALD LOUW RESEARCH COMMONS

Six UKZN librarians have recently returned from an intensive two-week Library Academy run by the Research Libraries Consortium and funded by the Carnegie Corporation. The aim of this ongoing project is to give further in-depth support to researchers and thereby contribute to increased research output in the country.
Prominent scientists and social scientists Peter Vale, Wieland Gevers, Luigi Nassimbeni, Lungisile Ntebeza, Melissa Steyn, Andrew Kaniki, Renfrew Christie, Rejoice Ngcongo and many others shared their experiences and their analysis of the current challenges facing researchers in South Africa.

World Library & Information Conference comes to Durban
The 73rd IFLA conference (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) will be held for the first time in South Africa at Durban’s International Conference Centre from the 19-23 August 2007. This annual event attracts library professionals from all over the world, who will gather to share insights, innovations and experiences on the theme of the congress “Libraries for the future: Progress, Development and Partnerships”.
This will be a busy time for UKZN Libraries as they are hosting four satellite sessions:
Health and Biosciences, at the Medical School Campus;
Education and Training; IT and Research in African Libraries; and Knowledge Management Best Practices, on the Howard College Campus.
Among UKZN Library staff attending the conference are sponsored grantees Nthabiseng Mosala-Bryant, Juggie Authar and Praversh Sukram. Other staff members will be involved in the volunteer programmes and provide assistance to the many visitors expected. Conference delegates are scheduled to visit UKZN and tour our libraries on 22 and 23 August.
Medical Library receives book donations from Van Schaik
Van Schaik bookstore donated 96 books to the Medical Library at the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine (NRMSM). The books are valued at R35 000 in total. Ms Barbara Hoskins, Manager of the Medical Branch of Van Schaik mentioned the donation of these valuable books is the company’s way of thanking the Medical School for their ongoing support of the campus bookstore.
The academic books consist of new editions and some surplus sale stock. Mrs Nonhlanhla Ngcobo, Medical Campus Librarian said,” We are very grateful to Van Schaik for the donation. We will put the books to very good use. We are ecstatic to receive such valuable books free of charge.”

New Library Director
Ms Nora Buchanan, formerly Campus Librarian : Howard College
has been as appointed to the new post of Director : University of KwaZulu-Natal Libraries with effect from 1 December 2006.
Although Nora has spent most of her working life in the academic library environment, she has experience of public and special libraries as well – notably Johannesburg Public Library and Anglo-American. Her library career at the University began in the early 1980’s when she joined the University of Natal Library, Durban as Periodicals Librarian and was appointed as the Deputy University Librarian in 1987, with overall responsibility for the development of electronic information and Acting University Librarian, Durban in 2003. She has had a long history with libraries at UKZN and has been involved in leadership of the sector for many years.
Nora received her first library qualifications from the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Natal. She holds an MBibl from the same department and is currently studying towards her doctorate there as well.
Nora is a founder member and staunch supporter of LIASA. She was the conference treasurer in Durban 2000, and is a member of the local organising committee for IFLA WLIC 2007.
She has played a significant role in many major library projects and has visited many libraries, both in South Africa and overseas. Recently she was one of a team of library managers from UCT, Wits and UKZN who made a successful bid for a very generous Carnegie Corporation grant designed to be a model for the enhancement of academic librarians and their libraries.
Strategic Planning Workshop
In April this year UKZN Library staff were involved in a number of
consultative workshops to discuss a mission, vision and strategy to develop library and information services to the University.
This culminated in a strategic workshop on 2nd and 3rd May for the Director and Campus Librarians which was facilitated by Ms Nicky Muller of Durban University of Technology.
The draft mission, vision and strategic plan resulting from the workshop were taken on a roadshow to each campus library and presented to staff to allow
discussion and comments.
Currently the Director is preparing a final draft for presentation to Professor Ahmed Bawa and the Library Advisory Committee.
UKZN Libraries New Website
The University of KwaZulu-Natal Libraries is pleased to announce the launch of a single Library website at https://library.ukzn.ac.za
The new website is intended as a gateway to the resources and services offered by the many UKZN libraries and is the outcome of a collaborative team effort by library staff. As a single access point to library collections, the subject support webpges have been designed to help users access information successfully across all campuses.
The website will be continuously updated and enhanced. Exciting developments are currently in the pipeline which will allow not only for the improved delivery of electronic resources, but also federated searching. The new website is now well-positioned to host these.
